Description of this release

Build 5T18 is founded on a major reform of the infrastructure supporting Inform. It contains miscellaneous new features to complete the work of implementing the less speculative proposals planned in the January 2007 consultation document. The interface application contains a new Source view for OS X which should handle large projects much better: it will follow on other platforms in subsequent builds. The first steps are made towards an official system for translating I7 into languages of play other than English, something which has previously been done but only with great difficulty. Certain run-time algorithms have been optimised for speed, and all 162 bug reports received up to 26 April 2008 have been closed out.

This is no longer the current build. Almost all users should look for the latest one. Old builds like this are unsupported, and are kept only for the benefit of people who need exactly to recreate the system as it stood in the past, perhaps to replicate an old Inform project.

I7_5T18_OSX.dmg

Inform for Mac OS X
	Universal Binary for Macs running Tiger 10.4.3 or later, including Leopard 10.5. (Panther 10.3.9 is unsupported, but may work.) Your browser may automatically mount the image once downloaded: if not, double-click the .dmg file by hand. Either way, you should see a Finder window open showing a virtual disk. This contains the Inform application Inform.app. Simply drag this to the computer’s Applications folder, or wherever else you like. To uninstall: Drag the application to the trash.

I7_5T18_Windows.exe

PC running Windows 95 or later
	(For Windows 95 and 98, Internet Explorer 5.0 or later must also be installed.) Click the link to download I7_5U92_Windows.exe (about 3.5 MB), and save it to your hard drive. Double click on the downloaded file to start installation. For most users the default install parameters are what is required, so just keep clicking "Next" until the install has completed. An entry for "Inform 7" will appear in the Start Menu, from which Inform can be run. To uninstall: Go to "Add or Remove Programs" in the Control Panel, select "Inform 7" and click on "Remove".

Command line Inform built for general Linux architectures
	(For the following six architectures: i386, x86_64, armv5tel, ppc, s390, s390x.) CLI Inform for Linux is supplied as a gzipped tar. Once this is opened, installation instructions can be found in the file INSTALL, and operational instructions in README or the manual page installed by the Inform installer. This is an assembly of a command-line interface written in Perl together with independent command-line tools.

	(For Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris on both x86 and sparc, as well as NexentaOS.) CLI Inform for Linux is supplied as a gzipped tar. Once this is opened, installation instructions can be found in the file INSTALL, and operational instructions in README or the manual page installed by the Inform installer. This is an assembly of a command-line interface written in Perl together with independent command-line tools.

GNOME Linux packaged for use with Fedora 8
	(This is a .rpm archive.) Double-click on the downloaded file and enter your administrator password to start installation. Click "OK" to install the file and click "Force install" if you get a message that the package is not signed. An entry for "GNOME Inform 7" will appear under "Programming" in the "Applications" menu. To uninstall: Go to "Add/Remove Software" in the "System/Administration" menu and type "gnome-inform7" in the "Find" box. Click "Find", then uncheck the check box in front of the package. Click "Apply" and type in your administrator password to uninstall it.

GNOME Linux packaged for use with Ubuntu 8.10
	(This is a .deb archive.) Double-click on the downloaded file to start installation. Click "Install Package" and enter your password. An entry for "GNOME Inform 7" will appear under "Programming" in the "Applications" menu after you have restarted your computer. To uninstall: Go to "Synaptic Package Manager" under "Administration" in the "System" menu, find "gnome-inform7" in the list, right-click on it, and select "Mark for complete removal". Then click "Apply".
